One thing I will say when you back restore back-up from 2003 to SE is that your embedded media player corrupts. Propably due to version change. I had to re-install from saved SD .cabs luckily.

there is no activesynch on the Mio to start before connecting!
Activesynch is built in to the operating system - it will be in the Programs folder from the Start menu |

Try starting Activesynch on the ppc before connecting the usb cable - I have to do this every time with mine |
