The chipset is SiRF III. But this chipset can talk different protocols, in this case it's own native protocol SiRF Binary, or the much more common clear text based NMEA protocol.

Glad to hear it worked out for you.
We do not recommend setting the receiver to SiRF mode. It's too much hassle, especially when you want to use other programs as well - most of the programs talk N ... |

What happens when you set the TomTom GPS to "Standard NMEA 38400" and port "COM7" - are the black dots running then?
(4800 is possible as well, but the default for Bluetooth is 38400.)
