Ok, this could have been my issue. Turning off the ignition with the Mio unit still switched on and plugged into the car charger.

I have this issue. I hadn't used it for a while (3 weeks ish), plugged it in and to the cigarette lighter and off I went - was working fine and charging.
But, there must have been very little charge ... |

I can confirm that Peter D's instructions do work for GPS Map on the Mio as it now appears to be working on mine (although I have yet to calibrate maps for it).

Its unnecessary to get warned about cameras on the other side of the road only pointing at traffic going the other way.
