Got an old unit back last week with the previous firmware. I can now change the cable baud rate from 38kbps to whatever I need.

The GR230 cable port puts out NMEA ASCII at TTL voltage levels, not RS232 levels. You need a conversion lead which is available from Holux UK. As for baud rate, see this thread:

I managed to have a chat with Graham this morning. He was very helpful.
He said run Holux's SiRFdemo program, switch to SiRF, them switch back to NMEA 4800.
Did this. Didn't work. Only 38kbps w ... |

Tried WinFAST from my 2210 via BT and RS232. Still get 38kbps back through the cable. Did an off/on of the GPS and got this text through the cable:
