I have a PiN 570 and yes once it has a GPS fix, the road map will scroll long as the position arrow moves. So you can follow your position even if you don't have a route planned.

You could try the Navman PiN 570, AcerN35 or one of the Mio units.
They are combined PDA with SatNav GPS for about that price.
