Hi

Completely new to this, but I'm sure many people have the same requirements as myself, which are to replicate Sat/Nav systems offered as extras on most cars, but at the cheapest price possible.

My 1st thoughts were a dedicated GPS system would be cheaper than PDA/GPS combo, but this is not always the case. Therefore if the combo route is the cheapest option & I'm not interested in any other fuction on the PDA/Pocket PC etc, then how low a spec can the unit be, before it impacts the GPS capability ?

Main reqs from GPS are :-
- Voice direction along the lines of Tom Tom (eg. warning ahead of turn + on turn)
- Post code finder
- Auto reroute when planned route not found.
- Minimal hassles in connection / charging / mounting / adequate volume

The only extra I can think of, above normal Sat/Nav, is the portability to use between 2 cars. Ability to run free S/W for speed camera warnings would be a bonus, but not critical.

I am based in the Midlands UK, & will be using across the UK.

Hopefully the above is enough detail ? but as new to this, I'm happy to expand on any points.

Any advice guys & any suggested packages will be appreciated.

Cheers Dave

I don't know your budget but how about TomTom Navigator 3 GPS with Car Kit, GB maps + Dell Axim X5 for under £320 ?

It will meet the majority of your requirements:
- Voice direction ... it is Tom Tom (eg. warning ahead of turn + on turn)
- Post code finder with added free software.
- Auto reroute when planned route not found.
- Minimal hassles in connection / charging / mounting / adequate volume
- Portability to use between 2 cars. Ability to run free S/W for speed camera warnings.

Of course this is only one possibility Thumbs Up

Cheers icsys.

Re budget, I was looking for the cheapest option to meet my criteria. Would I be correct in saying £300 really is the ball park figure for an entry system ?

Cheers Dave

That is a rock bottom price for a complete system. But the system mentioned above is one of the best and should suit you well.
From my own point of view, I would insist on a PDA with SD and CF card slots, because I run TomTom and CoPilot and need to be able to load other country maps for tips abroad. But even that can be overcome now that individual cards can be bought with 1GB capacity (at a price!)

You won't get much better at that price.
A dedicated system, such as the TomTom GO, will cost in the region of £445 +

Thanks guys.

What about this system at £269 :- http://www.tchibo.co.uk/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/uk/-/GBP/TdUkDisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=0005587

Although not Tom Tom software, the inclusion of a 256MB card in the price makes it very tempting. Any downsides ?

Note although it is sold out on the Web, I have found it in one of there stores.

Hi ...where did you see it for this price, as most places I find need to add VAT on top of £310 price ?

Cheers...although I didn't realise the dreaded VAT had to be added Sad

From this link it's £249+VAT = £293 http://www.totalpda.co.uk/product4926_0.aspx

Think I'll just have to swallow the £300 price mark for a setup then ;)

Thanks for all your help

Dave
