I am considering a TomTom bluetooth gps for PPC, and am trying to make sure it is a "12 channel parallel" receiver. I've checked all the specs and can only find references to 12 channel all-in-view. What the heck is all-in-view? And is that something different from parallel versus serial?

I've used a handheld serial GPS that was several years old and had a lot of trouble getting a fix on my position driving in the car, and then I used a parallel unit and it worked really well - so I was hoping to get something parallel.

Can anyone give me an explaination or comparision of parallel versus all-in-view, or tell me I am comparing completely different things.

Thanks a lot.

All 12 sat receivers are all-in-view. Basically it means that it can cope with up to 12 satellites at the same time receiving data from all 12 in a parallel data environment. If you see any that quote 8 sats then I'd avoid these and make sure you go for a 12 sat receiver.

Go for one that has a SiRF chipset, and most PPC CF's and BT models do, but some will use Evermore (TomTom do use SiRF chipsets as all of their receivers are Leadtek built). The main thing that enhances a GPS is the antenna. Quad Helix antennas are better than patch antennas providing they're pointing at the sky. All BT GPS's have a patch antenna.
