most of the tints are metallic (for the mirror effect) this is where the issues start - the mirror works both for the sunlight and for the GPS signal :-(
So yes, you should assume that every tinted glass is bad for reception. _________________ Lutz

I have an 04 VAG car (Seat Leon Cupra) and get a good GPS signal, would have thought the glass should be similar as its based on a Golf/Audi A3.
I've just got back from Spain where I had a new Peugeot 307, and the only way I could get a signal in that car is if I held the receiver against the side window, because the front windscreen had the UV treatment, even then I only got 2 or 3 sats occasionally. |

Yes, it can make a difference, but remember the brand of receiver makes a huge difference too. I have a 406 with some sort of tint, and my Snooper S6R does not work through the front window, but my TomTom3 works great. |

surely the easiest thing with most pocketPC based systems, using flash gps cards, is to get an external aeriel extension (one of those with a big square magnet at the end) and whack the magnet onto some metalic framework of the car? Makes the whole cage into an aeriel.
I usually plonk the extension of mine straight onto the bike's frame or a cooler part of the engine :D |

I drive several Pueugeot 406's. One with tinted glass works fine another with no tint struggles to pick up a signal.

It's mostly the Peugeots and Renaults with the heat-reflective windscreens that look a bit blue from the outside. And of course any with a heated windscreen will be a problem (I think Ford Scorpios had this?) |

The heated windscreens (Quickclear) from Ford where the are elements in the screen do not seem to cause a problem for the TomTom GPS. The heat reflective such as Renault stop it from working. |

I've been experimentng with the set-up in various trucks I drive for a living, which have many different set-ups. There's those with tinted screens, mirrored back screens, mobile jammers for sensitive loads (covers 2 metres immediate surrounding including cab) and other such strange and marvelous items.
Every time one has struggled I'd popped the trusty magnet/wire aerial extension in the side of the compact-flash card, lay the wire full length of the dash with the magnet sited roughly near the off-side door pillar, and the ipaq on the seat beside me, and sure as eggs is eggs it got a signal the moment I began moving.
the only time I've had zero signal is when going under a petrol station canopyu in devon filled with mobile jamming devices (apparently) and through the dartford tunnel. |

No problems with a VW Golf Mk5 with "heat insulating tinted glass"

I have a Galaxy with the heated screen.
It cuts the signal down by about 50%. |

It isn't the tint that causes the problem it is the Athermic treatment which reflects the heat and subsequently the GPS signal.
Not all tints have this treatment.
Most French makes seem to have this as standard.
I think that most Fords & Vauxhall's do not?
I have a 307 and have to site my Road Angel near the driver quarter light to get a good fix, same problem with wifeys Scenic. _________________ Iphone & Copilot (Retired- Ipaq 2210 ROM1.10.07, TTN5), Road Angel and occasionally TT one |
