I have read a little about the "grey screen" they seems to plague the Garmin 3598D - not I have it

Usually you can predict it happening - the maps zoom in and go blurred before hand (sometimes, not always)

They the map screen is just grey - everything else seems fine

Any ideas anyone? This is happening up to 3 to 4 times as day and will a full reset the only solution I have, it is not practical to use it any more

It has happened to me twice, and on both occasions I was using Garmin Smartphone Link. Since I stopped using it I haven't had any more issues at all. I'm sure I read somewhere that Garmin are aware of the situation, and that they are looking at a fix sometime in the near future Rolling Eyes Hope it's not too long.

Thanks for the advice - will give it a try tomorrow without it

Although having paid for the SmartLink Traffic, and with digital traffic not perfect around my driving areas, it seems a waste

Like you say, hope a fix is on the way!

I had it on my 2598. It was always if I was using Smartphone link. I bought a Garmin power adaptor with no aerial and use that with the 2598 and Smartlink and it works fine on long runs. If I am doing a short run, I just use the power adaptor with the DAB aerial.

Thanks for the advice - that does the trick, except I am often with no traffic then because of the poor reception locally

Had an update (remained at 4.0) for the traffic receiver today - but same problem Crying or Very sad

Over the years I've read countless reports of reception problems with the in-car aerial traffic receivers. The early ones where you needed a pseudo washing line between the sun visors put me right off them.

That was why I went straight for the Smartlink service as that comes in via a far more reliable source.

So far, for me, it's been 100% flawless and certainly more accurate, due to the more frequent updates, than TMC RDS. Also it covers far more roads than the TMC service.

That's exactly why I would like to use the SmartLink feature (and that I've paid for it!)

Needs to get resolved pretty soon

according to Garmin, if you in an area that receives digital traffic via the antenna this is far better than using it via smartlink and is only worthwhile if you dont get good digital signal.

The main reason I got Smartlink was to avoid having the supplied ciggy socket lead draping across the dash.

I have almost invisibly hard wired mine in with only about 4" of lead showing near the unit. The fusebox in mine is just by the drivers knees so far easier to reach invisibly than the socket in the centre console.

Well if this is the case it is purely down to Garmins choice of traffic data provider on the SmartLink - after all the mobile is bound to be able to carry more data, faster - providing it is being fed to it

Garmins they don't work with their traffic data provider, TomToms that cannot drive to post codes - seems like we've gone back a few years Rolling Eyes

... and Smartlink works perfectly for me :D

I don't know how or where they get their data but it showed a small hold up on a very minor A road yesterday. That section of road is miles from anywhere important and never usually blocked but when I got there there was indeed a small traffic delay due to a car transporter unloading

very impressed :D

Garmin get their traffic data from Inrix - http://www.inrix.com/

They also supply a phone app for users to indicate/confirm incidents.

Inrix supply the BBC and others with traffic news.
