I have both a TomTom Via and a 1690 with Nulink traffic etc. The TomTom traffic system was far better but is now running into trouble as it uses 2G and coverage is being slowly reduced. Does the 1690 use a 2G SIM? Do the new Digital Traffic models use TMC or do they have a 'proper' link via a SIM please?

Many thanks,

Allan

See here for Garmin traffic info http://www.garmin.com/uk/traffic

Note you can get live traffic via your own smart phone.

there are no plans to phase out 2g coveragein the uk. 80% of all voice calls are routed via 2g. if you have a 2g/3g phone your phone will quite often switch to 2g at the start of the call and then back to 3g after you hang up. this is done for 2 reasons 1st 2g is less likely to drop signal as the user moves around.2nd it frees up the 3g network for data reducing network congestion on the 3g network. as yet no operator has announced plans to retire 2g and when they do it isn't going to happen over night so you will likely get several years notice
