TT1005 - Let's see!

Acquired a TT1005 today with a view to replace my ageing TT940 and I'll report back over coming days with my findings.

I've read about the reflective screen and its connection limitations using MyTomTom but I guess I just need to find out for myself what it's like because not everyone highlights these as negatives.

When compared to features of my 940 that I used:

PLUS POINTS:

(1) Auto power on and off when connected to 12v socket in car. Saves wear and tear on button and overall a slicker operation of the unit;

(2) Fast route calculation and in particular re-routing;

(3) Quicker connection to LIVE Services;

(4) Vivid colours on day and night schemes. Overall improved graphics.

(5) Twitter feature more of a gimmick but could be useful in certain situations.

(6) Excellent magnetic docking setup.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

(1) No remote control. Leads to lots of finger prints on screen;

(2) Increased reflection from screen which at times was annoying;

(3) No light sensor so screen sometimes on day colours when I would expect night scheme;

(4) Google search replaced with Local Search which doesn't appear as effective.

(5) Cannot backup software and maps to computer. TomTom assure me though these are safe on their servers.

(6) No docking setup for when used in house and connected to computer. Would have to buy additional cable to avoid bringing one in from car!

CONCLUSION:

TomTom have omitted some useful features but looking at the rest of the product line up it appears this is the way forward for them at the moment which is a shame for the long term customer who has seen many changes from TomTom and not all for the good.

The competition for them just now still don't appear to have caught up despite offering lifetime map and traffic updates.

I currently run a TT950 Live which has been throwing a few wobblers over the last few weeks and was thinking about the TT1005.

Question: Can you still put your own "Homemade" POI's on the TT1005 ?

TT also have a little-known "Content Transfer Assistant", which makes copying all your personal stuff from an old model to a new one an easy one-step operation.
It works for POIs, favourites, map colour schemes, warning sounds, car icons etc.

No it doesn't have a light sensor... The last models to have one were the Go x40 series.

(Actually, the GO x50's had one too, but it was never enabled in the software)

What all the new models DO have is a "sunset time table" in their memory, so all they are doing is switching to night colours at a particular time of day (which varies by the latitude you're at).

It's usually vaguely right, but it's nowhere near as good as a proper hardware sensor.

So there's no variable multi-step dimming possible any more, and there's no change at all when you're under heavy trees or in a tunnel.

Also, they stupidly use the "satellite time" to do the switch, rather than the internal clock, so when you first switch the unit on, it stays in whatever state it was in last until it has got a good satellite lock.

I often find that really annoying as it's impossible to see what's on the screen if you're in bright sunlight and it's still on night colours.
