There seems to be a growing move to 'encourage' motor manufacturers to fit these systems.

Edit:link fix

Honda already do this and I suspect so do others.

I see them as useful extras but not something to be relied upon. I.e. it doesn't mean you can just keep your foot down knowing the car will break for you, BUT if you're too close or about to go into someone in a traffic jam it will, at least, reduce the risks of a bump.

Like seat belts really - if you're driving like an idiot then you can still be injured while wearing a seatbelt but if driving sensibly then they do help.

One rather embarasing moment for Volvo can be seen on This video clip showing off the auto-brake function to the media.......

How encouraging. Hope these cars that drive themselves do not suffer similar mishaps - but I suppose they are bound to do so.

I wonder who is liable for this sort of failure? Manufacturer for installation failure, or driver for trusting it?

I can imagine that working on the M25 Laughing

If it is set to give a 3 or 4 car gap between you and the one in front then you will end up going backwards as others will keep cutting into the gap.

I had not realised that most collisions [80%] occur below 20mph. What I like the sound of, is the lower insurance premiums for vehicles fitted with the system.
