|
|
I have the 720 with Western Europe maps and I can download map update with a years updates for £45 or a new Western Europe map for £34 which I assume will overwrite my existing one. or is it better to delete the map off my memory card first for a clean install ? I don't really want the quarterly updates so £34 seems OK.
But is it time to replace my little used 720 with a more modern one or a different make even ? Given that I don't use it a lot that would seem a bit drastic. Thoughts ? _________________ TomTom 720

If you are still happy with the results you get from the 720, keep it!
There is a lot to commend these old work-horses and they have several features missing from newer models.
About the only thing you might feel you are missing are the LIVE Services, and they are nowhere near as good as they were, with HDTraffic's range reduced, fuel prices withdrawn, and Google Search about to be replaced by TomTom's own inferior offering.
-----
As for the update process itself, I wouldn't delete the old map first. If you leave it on the SD card, when it gets replaced the TomTom will copy across your POI files into the new map.
It SHOULD also transfer all your Favourites and POI warning settings, but it often gets that wrong.
So the advice is to make a full backup (using Windows Explorer, not Home (see the FAQs for instructions)) before you update; then if your setting have got lost, you can copy the old "MapSettings.cfg" file over from the backup into the new map folder to recover them.
Once you are happy with the new map, make ANOTHER backup. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Cheers Andy. Already did an Explorer backup as you suggest.....and old lesson never forgotten
I agree on the 720 and after a few hours checking out the new devices I think I will keep it. It does the job perfectly well and I never wanted the live services or any of the other features you can now get. I also wasn't sure if purchasing just the Western Europe map on its own would just overwrite the old one as you suggest it does. I'll give that go. Not a bad deal for £34 _________________ TomTom 720

Still have my 720, think it is a great little machine. The maps must be 3 years old now (Western EU), but not had any problem with them to be honest - in the UK that is.
Unfortunately not been abroad for about 8 years now. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

Can't remember the last time I updated the maps and I've never had a problem in the UK either. But I am driving through Spain soon and I know the roads have changed a lot so its probably worth the update for me. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered _________________ TomTom 720
