Wobbly mount

Hi

Have just got myself a PDA, GPS receiver and TomTom3, and am very impressed except for 2 things:

1. The screen picks up an excessive amount of glare in bright conditions (have searched this and found a few things that may resolve the issue so dont worry about that )

2. I find that although my windscreen mount seems VERY secure, the actual flexible arm wobbles alot, making it hard to read anything off of the screen (when it is safe to do so).

Is this typical of windscreen mounts, or do i have a particuarly poor one? I also find that pressing the screen is difficult as the PDA "gives" so much when pressure is applied?

Have a look around at some mount sites & see how they position them. You usually have the neck touching the dash or something to stop the wobble.
I have quarter light windows which the mount is fixed too the neck is bent 90 degrees & a small piece of foam I.e. part of a car washing sponge placed between the mount and the door pillar.

In my opinion it is difficult to beat the clip type mounts. All goseneck mounts will suffer from vibration to a greater or lesser extent.

One way to minimise this is to try and support the arm on the dash, but this is often difficult.

There are some new mounts coming out now that are still suction mounts, but have a rigid arm. These could possibly be the best solution to mobile (multiple car) mounting. EasyDevices are selling them. They also feature in the new TomTom carkits.

I will try some different layouts to see if any of them help reduce the amount of vibration i have encountered.

I have considered the vent clip type, but have always been slightly put off as i hear that they are very difficult to remove and can lead to the vents themselves snapping 8O . Is there any truth in this, and is there a "king of vent mounts".

Oh, just a quick additional -

I looked at the screen protectors, but was unfortunately defeated when i realise they do not do one for my (ancient) Jornada 525.

Well, after looking in to the proclip kits, i have found that although they do make a clip that is suitable for my car, i could not find any information on the actuall cradles that must then be fixed to the clip or the mounts that form the joint between the cradle and the clip
If the cradles themselves are specialised, i have my doubts as to whether they do one for the 525 anyway....
I suppose it may be possible to bastardise the existing cradle i have, and then drill some holes in the proclip to accomodate it?

Actually that's the first time you've mentioned what PDA you have

You can see the cradles by selecting manufacturer and model in the list at left of Brodit's page, whilst they have a 545 they don't have a 525 solution. All Brodit's cradle's come with an adjustable socket mount on their rear.

No reason at all why your idea to modify your current cradle wouldn't work, the ProClips are designed to be drilled or screwed into anyway
