Today i upgraded my ipaq 3970 with TTN2.24 using a Fortuna BT Clipon GPS to firmware 2.10 and then upgraded it to Pocket PC 2003 before installing TTN3.Ive installed the latest updates for TTN3 and GPS but Tomtom will not see my BT GPS even though the IPAQ can and pairs with it.Ive set the GPS to TT wireless GPS and tried both com 5 and comm 8 with no luck.So i removed TTN3 and installed TTN2.24 back on and tried both GPS updates 2.08 (wich i was using with no problem) and tried 3.02 but TTN still does not see the BT GPS ! Help ![/size]

Hi,

Here are a few suggestions: -

I’m using:
NMEA 0183v2 38400
BT Serial Port: COM8

In the GPS status screen are you getting the moving dots from the satellite icon to the TomTom icon?

Have you clicked on “Connect to SPP slave”?

Have you tried deleting the pairing in the BT manager on the 3970 and then re-adding the BT Clip-On (password = 0000)?

Soft reset 3970
Switch on Clip-On and ensure that it has a clear view of the sky
Ensure 3970 BT manager is running and that the devices are paired
Start TomTom.

Regards

Are there any other COM ports marked as "BT Serial Port: COMx" that you could try?

Regards,

Was it an official HP/Compaq upgrade that you paid for, or was it a freebie that you downloaded from the web?

Regards,

Ah, is there a chance that it was an unofficial release of the PPC2003 upgrade?

The reason I say that is because there are some unofficial upgrades that upset Bluetooth and at the same time turn your beloved iPAQ into a brick, i.e. useless! 8O Crying or Very sad

Hi Pat,

I’m not an expert on PDA OS upgrades, and they are certainly not as easy as software up/downgrades. I have read some posts by DavidW (who is far more knowledgeable about these things) and it would appear that using an unofficial OS upgrade could cause permanent damage to the ROM, which can only be fixed by sending the iPAQ to the (HP authorised?) repair centre.

You may be able to revert back to PPC2002 with the backup that you made before the upgrade. You did make a backup didn’t you? But this may or may not work.

Regards,

The released version of the upgrade is 4.00.08 - you can check the version installed using the Asset Viewer (Start Menu, Settings, System tab, Asset Viewer, tap + next to Version - the ROM Revision should be 4.00.08). If it's lower than 4.00.08, you got a beta ROM - many of the beta ROMs have broken Bluetooth.

In any case, if you got the file from an internal server, you don't have a licence to install the upgrade on a personal device, as the upgrade is licensed per device.

On a Pocket PC 2003 iPAQ 3970, the outgoing serial port you use to connect to a Bluetooth GPS is COM5: - this is different to Pocket PC 2002 and to many Pocket PC 2003 iPAQs.

My sincere apologies for the misunderstanding - I thought you'd picked up the file from your internal server for your personal iPAQ, which would have almost certainly left you with an unlicensed Operating System on your iPAQ.

If the installer was one that allowed you to downgrade to 2002, it was probably the release 4.00.08 version. I find it better than any of the Pocket PC 2002 ROMs, though I did downgrade my own machine to start with due to lack of drivers for my keyboard and network card.

I suspect your Bluetooth GPS issue was down to using the wrong COM port. You use COM5: on a Pocket PC 2003 iPAQ 3970.

Be aware that if you downgraded ROM using the installer, you will probably need to reinstall the SD driver fix for Pocket PC 2002 - which is highly recommended. For a 3970, you can get that here.
