I was wondering if anyone had such a terrible experience with TomTom products and if anyone had a success at getting out of the loop with shipping back defective units one after the other?
My unit keeps dying for various reasons and TomTom keeps sending me defective replacements.
I wasted a lot of money on HW and all the maps I purchased from TomTom (North America, Western and Eastern Europe).
TomTom support does not want to do anything about it, they just keep repeating that they have to follow their “policies” about replacement process.
The unit is GO 630, the failures are with the screen where it gets stuck in a loop of self executing commands and keeps bringing you to police station location, and the latest one was inability to hold any charge, once the unit is off the charger battery goes dead within a couple of minutes.
But the problem is really TomTom as a company and their service and support, they keep sending me defective replacements one after another, it is crazy.

The product is utterly useless, you cannot rely on it when you need it.
Is anyone aware of any legal remedies that one can take?

Are you based in the UK or somewhere else?

I've heard that TomTom in America are harder to deal with when it comes to getting replacements or repairs, but I have to say that customer services in the UK have a good reputation for TRYING to be helpful (if a little lacking in detailed product knowledge sometimes).

In fact, my feeling is that they sometimes offer a replacement too quickly... when a bit more work could produce a solution with the original device.

Also you have to realise that they didn't get to be the market leader if they only supplied "utterly useless product". The vast majority of purchasers must be perfectly happy with their units.

It looks like you've been pretty unlucky though. How many replacements have you actually had?

I am located in Canada.
I do not find a navigation device that does not work when you need it to be useful at all, I may as well carry a rock with me instead of TomTom.
The problem is the company, their service and the attitude.
They are not willing to address a clearly present and serious problem with their product, and their support personnel keeps repeating that they are following policies.
I am now on the fourth failed device, I am going away and I will have no GPS to take with me.
At this point I might as well cut my losses and get GPS from another manufacturer.

That would probably be for the best as you obviously want nothing more to do with TomTom.

However, I can only repeat that I've had nothing but helpful treatment when I've dealt with TomTom in Europe.

On the one occasion when I needed a repair on an out of guarantee device, they offered a "refurbished"replacement which was indistinguishable from a brand new unit even down to the protective film over the screen.
