Hello,

I have had a GO 520 for 3 years. Just today in the car I noticed that the device had automatically opened the menu, and it appeared as if I was tapping away at one of the menu items (it was flashing, but not opening).

I took the device home, performed a reset using the small hole at the bottom, used the clear flash tool, and also restored an old backup of all software (I can sometimes get it to connect to my computer- usually by performing a reset, placing it in the dock and turning on). I also took it apart to check the battery - its life has now degraded to about 15 mins, but it doesn't appear to be swollen.

The device is now still the same, when I turn it on it appears as if someone is pressing the screen repeatedly (this symptom is intermittent). Occasionally the menu will open, but it is usually just the 2 blue areas at the bottom of the screen flashing. A button will flash when touched, but not open the relevant menu/screen.

Sorry for the long post, I'd very much appreciate it if anyone has any ideas.

Cheers,
Stephen.

The symptoms you describe can be caused by dirt between the screen and the bezel. Try running the corner of a piece of thin card all the way round between the two to dislodge any debris.

Thanks for your reply Anita,

I tried a piece of card and compressed air and neither seems to have made any difference. Is it possible to open the device and remove the screen from the bezel to check if this is the cause?

Do you have a screen protector on your unit? The reason I ask is, that over time, they tend to dry out and cause additional pressure on the screen, just like dirt under the bezel does.

Hi David,

No, no screen protector. I read about the battery swelling and possibly causing pressure but this doesn't seem to be the case. When the device is open and separated, the symptoms are also the same.

Thanks,
Stephen.

Has anyone any other suggestions? I'd prefer not to have to buy a new tomtom so any help would be much appreciated!

Stephen.

Sorry, I can't help - Anita gave the most probable cause (did you get ANY gunk out when you wiped it under the bezel? - I just got some out of mine).

In case of terminal problem, the GO550 Live, Refurbished, from TomTom Outlet Store is something of a bargain at present, including as it does, one year free Live services.

Possibly an internal short in the battery might make the device think it was connected to a computer rather than a power source. But then you'd think you'd get the 'do you want to connect to computer' page.

Does it work OK [however briefly] when on battery power?

Dennis - There wasn't anything really, just a small amount of dust! I'll have a look at that 550 thanks.

Mike - symptoms are the same on both battery and plugged in. When I plug it in it does ask to be connected to computer, but I can't press the button to say yes or no (it flashes but the press isn't actioned), but I can usually reset it and it then connects automatically

Sounds a bit dead to me I fear. Shame -I actually sometimes prefer my 520 over my 550.
