Hi
This is a cheap, but very good Satnav, bought off ebay. I want to to update the speed camera database but am reluctant to subscribe because it's not listed under a manufacturer. The speedcam file is just a text file in the unit called speedcam.txt.
Can anybody help please?

That SOUNDS like it should be possible.

Can you open your existing speedcam data file with Notepad or a similar simple text editor and post a couple of the lines of text up here, so we can see the layout?

Thanks very much for your prompt response - I'll do that tomorrow.

If it looks like this:-

X,Y,Type,Speed,DirType,Direction
-2.17787,50.68305,1,40,1,268
-2.09934,50.70722,1,30,1,37
-2.08935,53.5027,1,20,1,239

Then it's probably iGO based, and our database does run on it, and what's more it uses the direction data so that it does not alert you for cams going the other way.
If your speedcam.txt file is in a folder called Speedcam and there are also two other files called Speedcam.spdb and SpeedcamUpdates.spud, then it's definitely iGO and is a wonderful package, much better than TT, but without the Live and Traffic stuff

The format is exactly like that and the file structure is as you describe. I already knew it was iGO8 but will I not be asked for a manufacturer and a model number as, quite frankly, I have no clue as to who the the manufacturer is before I do a download? Can I just assume that any download for iGO8 is identical irrespective of the manufacturer.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Once you have subscribed, the download is fairly straightforward. You go to the download page. Scroll down a bit to the 'Sat Nav System' and select iGO. Then select UK single file. (No manufacturer or anything else required.)
Unzip the .txt file, copy it to the Speedcams folder overwriting the old one. Some people say to delete the original .txt, .spdb and .spud files, but I have not found this neccessary and if you delete the .spud file you will loose any cams that you have manually entered/modified.
Restart iGO. It will pause for quite a while (several 10s of seconds) on 'Initiallising Speedcam data' (or something like that). Then your're all systems go.
PS. Best cam database and well worth the money Very Happy

Hi
I've subscribed and done all that but am a little concerned that the old file was 670kb and the new (your) file is much smaller at 277kb (Europe). I don't really want to find out that it's incomplete the hard (expensive) way. Is there a simple reason for the disparity? Also, with download came a small text file "pocketgps-eur-pmobile.txt." Do I combine the two files? Thanks again for your help.

The PGPSW Euro download doesn't contain the camera locations in the UK which could explain the difference you are seeing in file size. To get both Euro and UK cameras in a single file you need to download both sets of data and concatenate them to form a single file - Mike

It's not expensive now that you have subscribed. You have already made your outlay, and if you find a new cam you will get a lifetime free subscription. The UK file is about 300k and I doubt if you will find many cams are missing. Add the EUR file and you end up with something approaching 600k, and I bet our UK db contains a lot more cams than the one that came with it, not to mention more up to date.

I don't think that our EUR file is as comprehensive as our UK db, but if you travel abroad a lot, that gives you a much beter chance of achieving the aforementioned lifetime award. You could, of course, if you wanted to, use your original db when on the continent.
The way iGO handles SPECS cams leaves quite a bit to be desired, as they work on the assumption that SPECS only come in pairs, so cancel the averaging at the second cam, which, in the UK, is likely to be the second one in a sequence of three or more Sad

Just re-read your post, and I suppose 'the expensive way' means £60 and 3 points Sad
