I have an ipaq 3900 thats running 2003 and tom tom3 , for some reason i cant get a connection . I get the green bars on conecting the blue tooth but no bytes are being transfered. I select the correct 38400 bla bla and bluetooth com8 etc.But no sats connection.

But i have no trouble conecting to an ipaq 3800 with 2002 and tom tom 3.
Am i missing something to do with 2003; ipaq 3900/ tomtom 3????
It works ok with my rikline 6010 Can you throw any light on this Dave???

The COM port you should select on a Pocket PC 2003 iPAQ 3970 is the outgoing Bluetooth COM port - which is COM5:, not COM8:. This is a different COM port to the same hardware running Pocket PC 2002.

If that doesn't get you going, then, assuming you're using TomTom GPS 2.08 or above (which you will be if you're running Navigator 3 unless you've taken some very deliberate steps to run an older version), you may fare better if you go to the Start menu, Settings, System tab, Remove Programs, and select TomTom ~ GPS and tap Remove, then following the instruction you will likely be given to soft reset. Doing this once simply removes a driver that interferes with the Bluetooth stack in various ways that TomTom believe are helpful, but can cause problems.

If neither of these suggestions get you going, I presume that you are using the official Pocket PC 2003 ROM from the HP upgrade kit, and not a beta one you found from some unofficial source online. Most of the beta ROMs have broken Bluetooth, and it's non-trivial to return to Pocket PC 2002 from one of those beta ROMs, though someone did offer some information on this in the forums recently.

If you want to check your ROM version, go to the Start menu, Settings, System tab, Asset Viewer and open Version. Your ROM Revision should be 4.00.08 - any earlier 4.00.0x version is beta. Not only do those beta ROMs contain various flaws, but unless you obtained the ROM from HP, you neither have a licence to use the ROM nor can you acquire one.

My apologies if the two paragraphs preceeding this one are not relevant, but there are people who don't realise that the only legitimate way to upgrade an older iPAQ to Pocket PC 2003 is to buy an upgrade kit. In this case, people using warez beta ROMs usually seem to get caught out by the unfinished Bluetooth code in some of the betas.

After fumbling in the dark and pulling my hair you solve it in seconds! Thanks dave.

Talking of upgrades - and i believe I have bought it from HP, i was also trying to upgrade another ipaq 3870 from 2002 to 2003 when it crashed half the way through and now i can't do anything with it at all - it wont sync from the cradle and wont soft reset one way or another?

What do I need to do to sort it out??

Regards Gary

I'm glad I solved one problem for you.

Unless you can get the 3800 series into ROM update mode and send a new ROM, I think the machine is what's usually termed 'bricked' (as in "as useful as a..."). I can't remember whether or not there's a boot loader on the 3800 series from which you can recover it - I don't think there is. I suspect that iPAQ is going to need service centre attention. They'll probably hook up an external flash programmer to write a new ROM image.

You can get it to USB rom Mode (this is on my 3870) but have make a connection before so the installer can verify the current Rom

Hold down button 2 and 4 and hard reset it.

Incidentally following this advice my 3870 is not seeing the gpsmart, My mistake was trying to use COM8, On the grounds it's an incoming port, but obviously not.

I thought Bluetooth was supposed to sort all the settings problems out Smile

My understanding is that there's an issue at the moment with the forums that means that users can't edit their own posts, and it's not as simple as changing the configuration to switch on editing for users. At the moment, only moderators and the Pocket GPS Team can edit posts (both our own and everyone else's).

I believe this is on the list of things to be looked at, but all the Pocket GPS Team are very busy.
