Hi,
I am about to change my PND, I am a lifelong TomTom fan but I am so disgusted with their failure to support non TT poi's and voice alerts that I am abandoning waiting for them to implement support.
I have narrowed down my choice of a replacement but I need help with the final decision.
I have read the PGPSW reviews of the Nuvi 1690 and 3790, so what am I getting (apart from a multi touch screen) for an extra £100 (Amazon have the 1690 for £157)?

the 3790 is a much thinner (i.e. pocketable) device and the screen is a lot lot clearer and higher resolution. it does, however, lack the live services and traffic is powered by the rather cumbersome FM lead.
the 1690 is considerably older and a considerably larger device. the live services are a good feature although after the initial year you have ot pay approx £40 per year if you want to keep using them. with the 3790 there are no annual charges and the FM traffic is free. without subscription you cannot use ANY of the main selling points such as traffic, speed cams (use our anyway, they're better [that's from experience not bias!]), petrol prices, google search etc.
hope that helps a bit? it might be worth checking with garmin about the exact subscription price but it's about £40 ish.
so if you plan on keeping it for 3 years you would need to add £90 to the purchase price - i.e. the same price as the 3790.
personally if it were me, i'd go for the 3790 - it just seems a much more refined device and the voice control is very very very impressive and useful (unlike tomtom's!)
