I have Satmap Active 10 with the GB OS maps on two SD cards.

Does anytone know format or where on the web I can find info. about how to read the .map files?

What I am aiming to do is to write a computer application that can read the .map file and to define a route/track - similar to the bikehike website but not having to be on line.

Alternative is to be able to emulate the satmap front panel as it is much easier to use a mouse instead if the little pointer to define a route.

If there is a feee application o nthe web that can do this, then let me know.

ta.

I assume that the Satmap map file is encrypted but there are alternatives.

GPSU allows you to plot a route on a map and export the route in a variety of formats. The free version may be sufficient.

If you get hold of the OS Opendata maps (District raster mapping 1:30,000) free from the OS, use MAPC2MAPC (again the unregistered version will do) to open the map from the TFW calibration files and write JPR that can be opened by GPSU.

thanks.

I am new to these file types but I can read .gpx as text, xml format.

From what I read, .map should be too, but when I tried view them on the SD card, they appear to be binary so could well be encrypted.

Will google these apps you mention.

Satmap use the .map file extension for both their mapping and tracks/routes.

The track/route .map files are simply a zipped .txt file, proprietary format but very similar to a .gpx but with most of the good stuff contained within a custom comment field.

The mapping .map files are also a zip containing what appear to be a collection of .smt map tiles and a .xml header.

There is some discussion on this in the GPSBabel forums.

Cheers

Neil
