I am a long time TomTom user, currently with a 540

My partner owns an iPhone 4 and having recently driven my car and used my TT now wants SatNav for her car.

Has anyone done a comparison review between TT PNDs and TT on iPhone?

What are the pros and cons?

Anyone had a similar decision to make recently?

With the iPhone you can't install custom POI files unless the iPhone is jail broken, even then only Sygic offers true custom POI support including spoken warnings etc.
If you do go down the route of iPhone for navigation make sure you have a powered car charger and holder to keep the device powered up and held securely in the car, without external power the battery in the iPhone will very quickley run down as the nav apps take up a lot of power - Mike

Of course some of the newer TT models don't allow custom POIs either

Anything else?

Don't get an iPhone if you send many texts. The keyboard is so useless that I've given up and gone back to my old Nokia.

I have a TT Go 520, a TT Go 540, a Google Nexus One and a Nokia 5800 with navigation software on both phones.

The phones are great (especially the Nokia where the maps are free for the whole world!) but at the end of the day a PND is a "proper" sat-nav system (especially the screen size) while the phones are ideal when walking or when I need a sat-nav when I didnt have one with me, especially with Google maps when I suddenly I dont know where I am going - a recent experience when I found that the pub in Lytham I thought I was going to wasnt where I thought it was Embarassed , google maps had heard of in and had me there in five minutes.

Travelling from home to Birmingham (not a place I am familiar with) on a Friday afternoon I would want the Go 540 to get the traffic data, sensible size screen etc.

Even if TT was available on the Android (most definitely phone of choice - an i-pod, i-phone free zone Smile ) I would still use the 540 for serious navigation. I wouldnt buy TT for Android anyway - I have NDrive which is a capable solution.

I think it is horses for courses.
