when I go to download poi's I get to where it says....
Loading POI categories (if this takes more than 1 minute please refresh selected country above)...
but I can not get to go any further than that as it seems to get stuck.....
Im using Google chrome as my browser if that makes a difference...
Is anyone else having a problem!! |

Have a look at This Topic, which suggests 2 possible remedies. _________________ Richard

There's something very odd about the code or the way browsers handle it.
Even though I suggested one of them, neither of those work-rounds have worked for me recently (using Firefox). In fact I haven't been able to access the POI downloads using Firefox for months now.
In the past, they haven't worked if I opened the page in Internet Explorer either.
But I tried it in IE just now and the categories loaded first time!

I wasn't able to try the suggestions because I've not had the problem for ages.
I'm using FF and visit at least once a week.
Could it be a browser, or ISP, cache issue? _________________ Richard

A few months ago the database structure and back-end code was changed to speed things up considerably. This seems to coincide with the time that Andy_P has been unable to download and Oldboy has had no issues... All very strange but it has always worked for me

I haven't downloaded POIs for some time because of this problem.
Even using the work arounds hasn't usually worked in FF, but Andy's suggestion of selecting another country as well as UK, refreshing, deselecting the other country, and refreshing again has just worked for me. _________________ Anita

I've downloaded in CSV format perfectly ok several times with FF recently - just tested again now and still seems fine. So don't think it can be an FF problem specifically. _________________ David

I have long thought that this is due to the specification of the PC running the browser or the other load on the PC when trying to load the POI list.
On my previous (rather old) PC it was a very frustrating experience as it hardly ever worked. On my work laptop (a bit newer) it would work if the processor wasn't doing anything else (even moving the mouse around prevented the list being displayed). On my nice shiny new PC it works every time.
Changing the browser doesn't seem to make any difference. _________________ Paul |

That makes sense pcaouolte as the list generation is client-side (i.e. it runs on the persons PC rather than being run on the server and fed to the browser) so any slowness on the PC/Mac etc would effect the browser performance in generating the list.

I've just tried again and the list populated straight away, although my PC's running more slowly today, so it seems to be totally random whether it works for me or not. Unless selecting two countries yesterday has somehow remedied the problem. _________________ Anita

Now there's bizarre...
While answering today's query about the Low Bridges POIs, I thought I'd better check they WERE there, so I went to the download page and same here... it populated immediately. And it hasn't done that for months.
I think MaFt's quietly tweaked something... |

On mine, I frequently don't get the second actual POI list, even after refreshing the country. Sometimes I have to hit the 'download' button, get the error message then go back, and sometimes that does not work.
This is on both my Pentium quad core desktop and my dual core lappy. When I do manage a download, I also get the correct zip file of POIs within the downloaded zip file so I have to unzip twice to get to the files and I think that some if the iGO ones do not work on iGO, so I have given up.
So c'mon guys, get it sorted. I accept the 'The manufacturer doesn't allow us to SDK' or whatever as the reason for not being able to simplify the cam download/install process, but problems with a straightforward download? |

Except it's not a "straightforward download" in the typical sense.
Download a program or data file from most sites and it's a static file that is as up to date as the date / time the file was created which could be hours, days, weeks ago...
The PGPSW POI Download system is more dynamic. It creates your downloads "on the fly". This means you always get the latest data immediately as the POI files are generated from current, "live" data and not from data created a few days ago.....
Unfortunately it creates problems for a few but if you can be more specific with the issues then i'm sure it can be sorted... |
