Greetinfgs.

I am trying to find a portable, waterproof GPS that can allow for the input of basic data.

I am going on a trip to the Caribbean and will be part of a study locating and categorizing coral colonies.

I'd like to be able to save the location and some basic info with the gps.

Is this possible? Is there a model that does this?

Thank you.

I'd be very wary of any GPS which claimed to be 'fully waterproof' - sea water and electronics just don't mix. I have an old Garmin GPS45 which was knocked out of my hand and went overboard a few years ago. It was rated as "waterproof" but the battery compartment flooded and took some careful cleaning out, although fortunately it survived. I believe the modern equivalent is a GPS48. Like most Handheld GPS units it allows you to instantaneously mark points with about 20 characters of comment - although the alphanumeric entry on a rocker pad can get very tedious Rolling Eyes . Once ashore you can transfer your waypoints to a PC for editing, etc.

Whatever system you chose, I strongly recommend a commercially produced sealed bag AND a lanyard round your neck or wrist.

Good luck
