Another great silliness from those people at TT support...
I've spent most of this week trying to download the latest map for my 720. I live in a very rural part of Cheshire and the broadband speed available to us is a mere 512kbps. No problems, I usually leave it overnight and it has completed in the morning. Not this time though. The transfer starts OK but in the morning there is a message on the PC saying the ZIP file is corrupted. It's actually too small - about 1.51Gb instead of the expected 1.75 So I try the next evening - exactly the same result - same incorrect file size. (Yes I did clear down all the previous incorrect files.)
So I drop TT support a line and they say the problem is that my connection speed is too slow and I need to get at least 2Mbps! After 20 years working on computer networks this is the first time I have heard that link speed affects data integrity. There is no chance of a speed increase in the forseeable future - not until BT put in Century21 networking.
Here is an extract from their reply...
Quote: | If you find that your map is taking more than 5 hours to download or the Download does not install correctly, then unfortunately your Internet connection is preventing the map from downloading correctly. Ideally, you will need a faster and more stable Internet connection. Unfortunately there is no other way to download your map, ultimately, you will need to find a PC that has a fast unrestricted internet access |
I've asked for a refund of my map upgrade monies - I'll see what happens! _________________ Phil |

Phil, Ask them for a copy of the map files on DVD zipped up, this can then be coppied to the download folder, connect the device and hit the update map option, Home will see the only file that is missing is the activation file and it will download this in seconds due to the small file size - I doubt they will send you the disk but it is worth asking, if they answer its not possible but if you want to carry out a trial of this method I suggest we continue the discussion via PM - Mike |

The only reason I can think of where a slow connection could cause a problem like this is where a badly designed program on the server expects everyone using the service to have urban-speed broadband.
Aren't there enough of us here who remember leaving computers running overnight downloading stuff on a 56Kb modem. _________________ Gerry

THanks for the offers of help - I've PM'd those concerned.
I'm going to take it into my wife's work and use their high speed broadband to do it! _________________ Phil |
