Help, can anyone tell me how to convert an 8 digit waypoint referance to a 10 digit that the satmap requires.

I assume you mean an OS grid reference?
The simplest way is to split the 8-digit number into 2 groups of 4, add a zero to the end of each group, then recombine them to form the 10 digit grid reference.
This is an approximation, but it's still accurate to within +/-10 metres, which is usually more than adequate for real-world applications (geocachers may disagree, but for mountain navigation, +/- 10 metres is the best you can hope to achieve after allowing for inaccuracies in gps fix and the map-making process)

An example:

an 8-figure grid reference: 12345678

...converted to 10-digit becomes: 1234056780

(The 2-letter grid square code at the beginning will remain unchanged)
