Has anybody every tried to modify any of the files in"Program Files\Navman\SmartST_CE\UI\sky_wqvga" to build a better GUI ?

I have given around 80 of the files a semi transparent background so i can see more of the map when they are overlaid on the map screen but was just wondering if anybody has tried anything more adventurous

Transparencies affect unit's performance -- if you add too many your unit may slow down to a crawl. If you want to speed it up avoid transparencies and replace all shading with solid colours; they compress better making files smaller and thus faster to load (they'll eat up the same amount of memory when unpacked, though). You may end up with uglier but more responsive UI.
