I bought a 765T a month or two ago and had the problem with finding satellites and then not being able to power it up. The voice also sounded distorted compared to my previous Nuvi 300 (do they all sound more distorted and electronic?) and my wife noted that it tried to direct her the wrong way around roundabouts in Germany.

Anyway rather than risk being given a repair rather than replacement I took it back and got a full refund.

I'm now wondering whether to buy another or to go for the 1490T (or even something else). I realise the 1490T lacks he FM transmitter, MP3 player, audiobooks and the feature that marks your position when you disconnect so you can find where you parked again, the 3D buildings ... and the 1490T has a more user friendly touch screen, a bigger screen and I think better pedestrian map options but I can't find any decent reviews of the 1490T.

So what do you think? What should I go for? Or should I just get an iphone?

I can't give you a review of the 1xxx series of devices but can only give you the information I've got from my dealer where I recently got my 765T from, which by the way works well! He told me that the 1xxx series is kind of the entry level device replacing the 3xx ones and the 7xx is the more advanced as well as more expensive line of products. Considering what you've written about it, this sounds kind of correct, and looking at the price ranges of these devices, it confirms it.
