I'd go with the 730 myself. I would never subscribe to live services and I got an RDS aeriel from Currys for £4.97. You never know - you might want European map coverage sometime and I also use the FM transmission.
You could also look at the Garmin 265WT at a similar price.

The 730 is a better equiped device straight out of the box, with the 730 you get:
mp3 Player
RDS-TMC/ iPOD socket
Audio Line out socket
FM Tx
European Mapping
Sure you can do some of the above with a 540 IF you purchase the accessory mount for a further £25 to £30.
As you state you have little use for the Live services why buy a Live equipped device?
As for the RDS-TMC receiver they are actually available for £1:97 from PC World/ Curries but availability is getting a tad difficult.
I would go for the 730 rather than the 540 if you want the mp3 player and FM Tx, its a far more capable device unless you want the Live services - Mike |

I think I found the RDS-TMC connector you're referring to. It says compatibility with the 720, but not the 730. Is it the same beast?

I think not. The receiver for the 720 connects via a small jack, but the one for the 730 uses a small USB plug and incorporates the power input to the device

Hi, my 730 does have a separate connector on the underside for the TomTom RDS to plug into. I think the 720 and 730 are identical (once you have applied the 720 updates from TomTom) apart from a different coloured front bezel.
I don't know anything about the 540 i'm afraid, but i am satisfied with my 730 and would buy another. And if its cheaper, even better i'd say. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

David. | The RDS-TMC jack plug is compatible with X20 and X30 devices, it says so on the box. Hardware wise they are identical. |

Just an aside, I would really like one of these but my nearest Currys is over 1000miles away and on the other side of the Chanel. I have checked most of the stores near where my UK based friends live but stocks are running out. If any one is going to buy one of these from their local store, would you consider buying one for me also and mailing it out to me in Spain. I would get the money back to you, I'm reasonably honest
EDIT - Just confirming that it is the £2 RDS -TMC Traffic receiver from Currys I'm talking about and not the £220 TT GO730 from Halfords.
Many Thanks, AliOnHols.
EDIT_EDIT. RDS -TMC Traffic receiver now available for delivery. I have made arrangements for delivery. Many Thanks. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
