I have recently purchased a H5550 with TT3 installed from ebay, it has the GB map and the France map installed on a CF card, I am trying to plan a route from GB to Paris, but this does not appear to be possible, yet the description on the TT site says you can. How is this possible please.

thanks

You need the major roads of Europe map installed for cross border routing. This comes free with TTN3, but whether it has been supplied to you by your ebay vendor is another matter.

If you haven't got the TomTom Navigator CDs and product code labels (you need at least two products for your setup - either Navigator 3 GB and Navigator 3 France, or a Navigator 3 country version and Navigator 3 Maps of Western Europe), you haven't acquired a full and legal copy of Navigator 3 and the maps with your purchase. There's no problem with the software and maps being preinstalled, but this is not how TomTom supplies any version of Navigator 3 for the Pocket PC.

Contact the vendor - if you're not happy with the response, consider reporting him or her to eBay and TomTom for selling pirate software. It might be that he/she has installed Navigator using his CDs and product codes, which is a breach of the licence agreement.

If you've got the CDs and product codes, simply install the Major Roads of Europe map.

Thanks to David, I do have the CD's and the box TT came in with the Dash mount, product codes, receiver etc. The Major roads were not installed though, just the maps. I have now installed this. Thanks for your help.

I'm delighted to hear you've got all the bits that make up TomTom Navigator, and that you've now got your Major Roads of Europe map installed.

The reason for giving that detail is that, sadly, we have had examples in the forums of people buying copies of Navigator on eBay with hardware that turned out not to be legitimate - that is, the product code(s) and CD(s) weren't supplied, and the pre-installed software was via a copy of Navigator that the seller had held on to. I'm glad yours didn't fall into this category.

Thanks to Mark also for replying to my request.

I did ask this chap via e-mail whether he had the CD's or not for the TT installation before I purchased it.

I did fall into that trap you mentioned David with a laptop I bought from ebay, it had windows xp pro on, but was an illegal copy, so now I always ask first.

Thanks to both Mark and David for spending the time.

The other way of doing it is to set up a POI for Calais, or where ever you are crossing the channel and head for that. When you get into France, just switch maps to the France Map and head for Paris. The problem with Major Roads of Europe is just that, it only shows the major roads, and depending where you are heading for in Paris the roads may ot show.

Indeed, as Steve says, at some point you'll have to switch to the actual France map for detailed routing. Major Roads of Europe will allow you to get a good idea of your total journey time and the route for the entire journey.

The best thing to do may be to switch when you're crossing the Channel. POIs can make the whole process much easier - though you may find that you need to copy POI files between your map folders so that you have the same POIs on Major Roads of Europe and your country maps.

To an extent, it's about experimenting with what is right for you.
