My Go 720 is now 18 months old and the map is a little out of date. I was thinking of buying the latest map of Western & Central Europe which is on offer at £59.95.
TomTom is telling me that as an alternative I can sign up to their update service for 12 months for a total of £71 (including my 6 quarters back dated updates)
I was thinking this would give me 12 months updates for about £16 more than buying the map outright (which would be out of date by mid August)

Is this the best deal, or am I missing something here? Laughing Laughing

It really is the best deal. Prices using the map update service are very good now. For a small amount more than a new single map, you will receive the next 4 map upgrades over the next 12 months!

Actually, £59.95 is a discounted price offer right now - normal price is £74.95, so the "normal" map upgrade service at £71 is in fact cheaper than buying a new map (outside the discount offer period).

We usually find they do discounted prices in the run up to releasing the next new map.

Okay, I fell for the map update service, paid my money, and lost my favourites. Can I just copy the file from the backup into the new map directory, or is that not going to work? Have I lost other settings too?

This is such a poor system - every quarter it trashes your favourites. I'd be ashamed to have written this.

It's a known problem when using the Favourites facility.

Have a look at #15 of the TomTom FAQ's for a workaround.

Thanks - I had looked at that before, but this was just a map update and not an OS update so I hadn't thought it applied. However, rather than go through that long procedure, which I'd done before when upgrading the firmware, I decided I'd try just copying mapsettings.cfg back in. And it has worked just fine. Hopefully this will work each quarter.

I believe the current term for this working is "lucky". Lots of people are reporting that it doesn't all the time. As maps and software get updated, I would honestly advise against using Favourites any more and convert them to POIs - it's on the same FAQ.

I'm not 100% sure, but I THINK that there will only be compatibility problems with MapSettings.cfg if you update the OS, not the map on it's own.
Of course, map updates often require OS updates too.

I'm not sure "Lucky" is how I'd describe this situation. TomTom are selling a product that will update your map quarterly, and as part of that they render one of the key facilities useless? That's lucky? I'll raise a support question because if we don't let them know it is a problem they'll not fix it.

And I'll repeat this each quarter.

Hmm, of course on submitting I find a comprehensive set of FAQs waiting about how I just have to make a backup before I discover I lost my settings file, and how using POIs are actually better because they aren't lost and you can have more of them.

This is just spin on a dodgy programming decision. Here's hoping that one day someone will move the favourites into a separate file, and then such problems will go away. Grrr.

Its your choice at the end of the day, you can carry on with Favourites and all the hastle each upgrade causes or switch to using a custom POI file that can be transfered between devices/ maps and survives updates without any issue - Mike

Hmmm, I take it the 2 yr Map update card for £69.99 will only update one region on my 940? Either UK or EU or US? Or does it do "Western Europe" or "US"?

I don't usually bother with map updates but for £69.99 to get quarterly updates I might just go for it. At least it future proofs my new device.

Slightly OT but if I buy 12 months LIVE and 24 Months map updates could this be transferred to a new device if my unit got stolen/lost? Or does it mean I am attaching more "value" to the unit which would mean more to replace if lost/stolen?

Its only one map that gets the update, you would have to pay a second fee to have both maps covered by the update scheme.

As for transfering services to a new/ replacement device, you would have to discuss this with TomTom, they can do this - Mike

UK is included in "Western Europe".

Ok thanks,

Don't use it too much in the US. Maybe 2-3 times a year but I do find that when the Yanks want to change a road network they do it big style. More so than a little roundabout here and an extra lane there. Lol!

Maybe the US map updates would be best! Surprised
