I used to have the camera database a couple of years ago, but moved to Poland, so did not renew my membership. However I have again as it seems there are entries being submitted for Poland, so for the last few days again I am a paid up member. I have been submitting the correct speeds on some local cameras to me. Its been very easy using the ID code and I am happy to do this as I come across cameras.

I just submitted a new camera that was missing, but feel that I am not sure what to call them. All the ones so far with missing speeds are mark as Gatso, but in Poland none of the road actually has markings on, so it seems to me at least hard to tell which way they are doing there business or what they indeed are. If I come across cameras I would like to submit them correctly. The speed I can do, but any tips to identifying them correctly or are the just called Gatsos and thats fine?

Many thanks,

Andy

i wouldn't class myself as strange but a picture would be handy! i'm sure at some point we will need a country-by-country guide to the different camera types and what they are / how to submit them to us!

at present i have some from arizona, belgium, florida, france, greece, norway, sweden!

My camera is packed and ready. In the UK my TomTom would be singing at the top of its voice the Gatso song almost all the time, then a bright yellow box that flashes and lots of pretty road markings. Here we get a small sign to say camera ahead, then its looking for a small grey box. I have never seen one flash yet and as there are no road markings I am A: insure what they are. B: wonder which side of the road they are actually monitoring.

Anyway a photo will be posted today with our local grey box and I will be happy to understand how it does it's business. The general rule of thumb here is, if its in a town, village its 50 KPH unless marked as another speed. On the Expressways we can do 110 KPH, but it often is reduced to 70 KPH for traffic lights, uncontrolled side roads, public crossings and the blighters are usually hanging around these spots.

I doubt wether there are mobile sites as such. You will see oncoming cars flashing you and that means Police ahead, so they are either going to point a speed device at you or stop you for a check. I have been caught once for speeding. I was doing 90 KPH and coming into a village I was slowing down to 50 KPH, but they were hiding at the start of the village, a bit sneaky I thought, but was clocked at 74 MPH. I would recommend that you are pleasant and admit guilt with no excuses, a Pole with argue until the cows come home, the Police will like you for not starting a fight. The fine should have been 100 PZL about £20 and has to be in cash, I was left off for being a new Polish citizen.

it physically looks like a monitron to me but without the piezo strips on the floor...

the main head looks like it could catch both sides of the road BUT the top bit looks more like it is pointing at the driver so my gut instinct is that it is forward facing (faces driver) and single direction

inthe128, would it be possible to get the name or some information on the 'Gatso' so we can look it up on the internet?

On the first picture, there is some text at the top of the post, but I can't read it.

No problem, what it says in slighted faded letters is Zurad, who appear to manufacture speed cameras, web site is all in Polish

http://www.zurad.com.pl/tnukepl/index.php

I will have a better look at it tomorrow see if I can glean some information, my reading Polish is not so good, as much as I can make out it appears that the top bit is infa red and then the camera itself. I would also say that it needs to take a picture that is good enough to read the plate and catch the drivers face, so to me that says its pointing towards the driver and not catching people coming the other way.

I hope that makes some sort of sense. I am rather impressed that the whole thing appears to be air-conditioned.
