Nu map lifetime - or SD card?

Hi

I have a Nuvi 660 with the full European 2007 city navigator NTv9 maps, and am balking at the high cost of updating the maps.

I was tempted by the lifetime update card at about £90 but I note it can "only be used with one registered device" - an astounding bit of small print. What if the one I have breaks down, is lost, or stolen? Or I just want to buy a newer one? Is it really correct that I couldn't use the updates I've paid for on a new device? If so, that's a deal-breaker I'm afraid.

Apparently the DVD version of an update can also only be used on one device, too. But I'm told the SD card version can be used in any Garmin - is that therefore a way around my concerns?

Are there any downsides to using an SD card? Do you just insert it and navigate, i.e. do the maps run from the card, or do you copy them to the internal memory, replacing the original map? If they run from the card, are there any speed issues and are all countries accessible? Can it be backed up and used on a PC as the DVD can?

Sorry for all these Qs, and apols if they've been asked and answered before, but I have looked and couldn't find answers here.

One final Q - I've found the SD card version at a lower price via Garminator.com - are they bona fide and reliable?

I'm wondering whether a new unit with new maps might just be simpler!
