Hi everyone

Asking for some advice please.I have a TT GO 720 Map version710.1561 and App 8.350.Is the map update worth it and will I get lane guidance and IQ routes with it.I cannot just upgrade the map I also have to pay for 1 years update as well. Will the update overwrite the old map as my internal memory is almost full?

Thanks cabmanuk Very Happy

With the latest Navcore and map installed to the device you will get ALG/ Reality view and IQ Routes-2. The update will replace the old map with a new one, from what seem to remember its actually cheaper getting the 12 months map upgrade package than purchasing a single map, with the 12 month upgade you will get four complete new maps during this time period.
If you find the new map won't install to the device due a lack of memory on the device then consider putting the map on an SD memory card, there are other files and folders that can be removed from the device to create space for the map installation, once its complete these files/ folders can then be placed back on the device.
If you need to make space on the device ask again, but I would seriously consider a memory card as its much easier and they cost under £5 these days - Mike

Make a full backup of the device using Windows Explorer to the PC BEFORE you update just in case - Mike

Just a word of caution. I also have a 720 which I upgraded yesterday to 8.350, but I found that with this version of the software the voice commands, and particularly the POI warnings, were too quiet. OK at town speeds, but not good enough on the motorway.
I have wound back to 8.300 and will wait until they have sorted the sound volume before upgrading again.

Just out of curiosity ... is it possible, on a GO720, to have the TT firmware living in the internal memory and the map on an SD card? On my old One with an SD card slot, everything had to be together, in one place or the other - I don't think it was possible to split them up.

Are there any advantages to splitting the contents up in that way? Or would it be better to get a decent SDHC card (I'm thinking 4Gb, so that I have some room for a few mp3s and so on, but no need for too many as I also have an Ipod that I use in the car) and put both the application and the map onto it? What effect would it have on the speed of route planning, for example?

Any particular SD cards that anyone would particularly recommend as being good for use in a GO at the moment?

You can indeed have a map on the SD card and mp3 audio files on the SD card and the x20/ x30 devices will see and use them, on the x20/ x30 units the device share the built in Flash memory and that of the SD card when fitted.
The older One XL cannot do this so you had to put everything on the card as you rightly pointed out, but x20/ x30 are a bit smarter in how they opperate.

As for cards don't forget the devices will also support the higher capacity SDHC format up to and including 32GB, I use "Peak" class 6 (thats the speed rating) 8GB and 16GB cards in my devices, they work very well - Mike

If you aren't in a hurry it might be worth waiting for the map update as there could be a new one later tjhis month. If you update now, you wioll effectively lose one quarter of the update service.

For others benefit... this is a bit of a mystery as it isn't affecting everybody.
I think I've seen two reports of it so far.

Thanks for clarifying that, Mike. Is there a particular 'procedure' for shifting the map onto the SD card via Home (either when updating or as a separate operation)? Or is it done via Windows Explorer?

Either will do.
Explorer is simplest, just cut and paste the entire named map folder ("Western_Europe" or whatever) from one to the other.

If you are downloading a NEW map using home, you need to select the SD card as the working storage when Home first starts up.

Thanks Andy, I understand. Wasn't quite sure how it worked!

I haven't used my Latest Map Guarantee on my new 720 yet (waiting til the end of the month to see if I can catch the new map!) - presumably if I move the map folder onto the SD card, any new maps installed via Home will then put themselves there also?

Gareth, presume NOTHING with TomTom Confused

Having said that, I too, have a 720 with (in my case) the North America map on a sdhc card and the application on internal.

When I knew I was about to upgrade my map, I selected the 'external storage' when I first started Home and yes, the new map (825) overwrote the one I had on the card. In my case, the custom ov2 files I had in my old map folder stayed after the update but back up your old map folder to the computer, just in case, prior to an update. Use Explorer, not Home, for the backup.

What he said.... Very Happy

I suspect if you put the existing map on the card and then forget to select the card when Home starts up, any new map would get downloaaded to the internal memory instead.

I think i'm in a similar boat as the OP, my 720 came though the door today....toook it for a quick spin up the M27 on V7 of the code....

What was quite interesting when I came through the "Marriot" crossroads it was still a roundabout.....it's been crossroads for 18 months and this is a major junction! But I guess I will learn the pros and cons of Sat Nav,

Anyway - enough of this ramblings....does anybody know when TT are / will release new maps.....I'm off on a trek to EuroDisney during the half term - do I leave it upto the last moment or should I update 30 days from now (i.e. first week in June).....

Thanks for all the helpful advice....been reading lots before taking the plunge....
