I had to navigate my way through Derby today for the first time. I have an old Garmin C310 Streetpilot but all uptodate software and 2009 maps.
It is of little use when all you get is
""in a quarter of a mile turn BONG..BONG..BONG"" and on it goes...Is there any way at all that these bongs can be turned off ? Yes , I got lost or at least took far too many wrong turns or missed turns. It really is useless in situations like this.

Is there any on screen alert when they happen?

Do you have any sped camera databases loaded? Have you tried switching them off under Tools, Settings, Proximity Alerts to see if it makes a difference?

Thanks for the response.

Yes there is a screen alert, a bar at the top of the screen tells me of a 40 or 50mph limit area.

No speed camera databases loaded, either Garmin or third party. I have a separate GPS camera unit.

I hadn't tried the Proximity alerts as there is nothing in the hand book that tells me what this is and what it does so it was 'on'. Didn't want to fiddle when I had no idea what it did. I'll try it in 'off' mode and see if that makes a difference.

Cheers for the advice.

There is some speed alert data built into the maps, which has been around since the v7 maps which generates these alerts. If they are not from the PGPSW database or the Garmin Cyclops database then I'm afraid there doesn't seem to be a way to stop these. They were as annoying and pointless 3 years ago on my i3 as they are now...

Ah, well in that case if I am stuck with them then perhaps it is time to change the sat nav for one without the bongs !

Cheers

Might be worth contacting Garmin....

Can you give me a route to test here?

Also are you sure there are no speed cameras loaded? Maybe even from the past?

Thanks again Very Happy

I will e-mail Garmin and see if they can help/offer advice.

Route was along the A52 from Nottingham to Derby and then on to Kedleston Hall. Went bananas in Derby.
I have not loaded any speed cameras on to it, Garmin don't cover the C310 with their data base and I have not used the database from here. Did try once a long time back but then I couldn't do anything as I use an AppleMac, not a PC. Couldn't even download onto the Mac at the time.
To be honest, I have never been fully 100% happy with the C310 but it is OK for MOST of the time and it is only used occasionally ,so it gives me an excuse to change perhaps.

Cheers

The garmin speed camera database talks of speed limit areas .
The pogketgps warns of cameras

I think you most probably still have the garmin cameras turned on since new .

They can be turned off but where I dont know.

OP has already stated Garmin database isn't loaded or available for C310.

On units that do have it loaded it's usually under

Tools, Settings, Proximity Alerts, Change

or simalar...

I did think that most Garmins come with it already loaded but that you have to pay to get it updated which is why I mentioned that their warning shows as limit areas as againgst others showing cameras.

Thanks again.

The bongs are when the speed zone warning is flashed up at the top of the screen, I have not seen a speed camera warning symbol on the map at all. I can go tools, settings, proximity alerts (on/off) but that is all. I do know that it bonged from new, on the old map version, and rather hoped that an update might be quieter.
If garmin don't offer a solution then I will either live with it or change at some point. It is not a vital bit of kit !

Cheers

It does sound like you have the garmin speed camera database switched on ,they dont show a camera icon but have speed limit areas .

Ther will be a place somewhere that you can turn it off but I dont know your unit.

Thanks for the info'.
I have looked at every screen in the tools menu and nothing seems to relate to cameras, perhaps it isn't an option on this basic model.

Cheers

I can't see the Garmin Cyclops database is available or supported on anything below the Nuvi range.

It's possible these alerts are the annoying Speed Alerts that randomly used to pop up on my i3 when occasionally approaching a speed limit change. There didn't seem to be any way to stop them on that either.

Do you have the PGPSW database installed? Can you try running a demo again with and without the database? Will you ever be repeating the trip? I can't reproduce the problem here but i wonder if it's a combination of old hardware and new maps...
