Does the TomTom XL with Maps of Western Europe also have a memory card slot? I know the ONE no longer has this useful feature.
The reason I ask is that I'm beginning to think my GO300 is slowly starting to die e.g. it seems to be taking longer and longer to get a sat lock when starting up. I have to sit in car parks or drive for minutes sometimes before it gets a lock and that's with no tall buildings in the area. Only last week I had driven two miles before it got a lock and it's now getting prone to keep losing itself and recalculating route for no apparent reason. I purchased it in March 2004. It'll be like losing a friend.  |

Old "TomTom ONE XL" - yes
New "TomTom XL" - no
Try to find a refurb Go 520 or 720. Cheaper and better! |

If you do buy a new ONE V4 or XL with EasyPort mount make sure you buy WITH Western Europe maps on it.
The UK map version has 1GB internal memory. Western Europe map version has 2GB internal memory.
But as Andy says, buy a refurb  |

So let me get this right - even the new XL no longer has a memory card slot which means if I went to America as an example I wouldn't be able to load USA maps onto the XL - and this is progress how?????????
I'm not into buying refurbs of anything thank you. |

Yeah, you could......
Move your GB & WE map from your unit to your computer.
Purchase, dl and install the US map on your unit.
After returning from the States, reverse the procedure.

Purchase, dl and install the US map on your unit.
After returning from the States, reverse the procedure. |
Ah! so you can access the internal flash memory then without any issues - I wondered if TomTom had managed to block access to the units memory in some way. This sounds like a fair option then. The reason I don't want one of the more expensive units is I no longer do much driving in connection with my work so the TomTom only gets used now if I'm going somewhere unfamiliar or for holidays etc.
Does anyone know how much free space is left on the XL with Maps of Western Europe? One other question is there difference between the ONE and the ONE XL apart from screen size, plus if you get one with Traffic is it any good and do you still have to have something stuck to your windscreen (I now use a bean bag instead of screen mount for TomTom and much prefer this to having something stuck on scree). |

The internal Flash Memory will appear as a removable drive in Windows Explorer, so you can use this to read/ write or copy/ paste files to and from the device.
I am not too sure what free memory would be available, it will be sufficiant for POI files but not enough for another map folder without removing the supplied map first. ou really do need to get the device with European mapping pre-installed though, otherwise there will be inadequate built in memory with no way to suplement it.
The wider screen device is much better in use, but this is down to individual choice, go and have a look at the two different screen sizes on demo in a local store to make your own mind up.
Traffic is only available via RDS-TMC with the newer One and XL devices, this si still somewhat a postcode lottery in terms of reception in the UK, then when you have a signal the quality of the data is a different issue. When it works it is very good, but most of the time I tend to use other information sources to make my own mind up about what the device is telling me. Sometimes I ignore the supposed hold up, other times I manually accept the re-route due to traffic - I would never let the device re-route autamatically though.
A bean bag mount isn't going to work too well with the newer devices due to their slim but curved base, add to this the power lead you really need to use the supplied holder, there are third party mounts available which offer different (and better) solutions - Mike |

Thanks for the very informative info Mike much appreciated. I was always going to get the model with European Maps mainly as you say for the extra memory (much preferred the card slot though) I think I'll give Traffic a miss though.
As for bean bag, well that remains to be seen - mine has a cut out at the front so I'm hoping this will suffice. One way or another it will have to as I'm not going back to screen mounting anything and I won't glue or screw anything onto the dash either.
I may just wait for my 300 to die completley - I thought it was on it's way out last year but it kept going although the sat lock issue is a right pain. |
