520 and 8GB SDHC Card

I've just received my first Tomtom 520 but haven't updated the application or maps yet due to the imminent upgrade due soon.
I'm just wondering if the 520 will now write to a card through TTHome (without a card reader) and if anyone has tried using a 16GB or higher card.

Firmware 8.3 allows for the use of sdhc cards in excess of 4 gigs without needing a card reader.

Why are you holding back from updating the application, you can update this as often as you like? There is not expected to be any new release in the immediate future, unless any beta testers here know otherwise.

As for the map, with a new map due in the next few days it is sensible to wait but if you wait until day 30 and find it does not work, you will not get much help from TomTom as by the time they get round to looking into it, they will say the latest map guarantee has expired.

If you got your timing wrong and intend taking out the map update service, the penalty would be less than £7, I got it wrong. Hardly worth worrying about.

Thanks for the info Mike......that means not having to bother connecting/charging/carrying the iPod.....one less gadget to worry about.

If my memory serves me correctly up until a few months ago wasn’t there a snag if one used a card over 4Gb. Something about one couldn’t write to it or something along those lines. Has that issue been overcome or am I mistaken?
I have no use for a large card and doubt if I ever will but I am interested in keeping up with the plot.

There used to be an issue with the larger capacity cards over 4GB, but one of the few things Navcore 8,300 has actually fixed is this one, so you can now use the higher capacity cards without an issue - Mike

So, v8.300 was a success as far as that issue was concerned. That makes it even more puzzling that the two other problems came into existence yet went undetected (stutter/refresh) until released upon the general public.
Delight must have turned to dismay at Tomtom HQ.

there is still a limit, i took the 16gig card out of my Creative Zen and my 520 ignored it compleatly and i do have upto date firmeware
