Im new to this and found it a brilliant piece of kit, did my first solo 21m walk without getting lost however according to the total ascent, ive nearly climbed everest, I cleared the log before I start and everything else seems fine but im sure i havnt done as much ascent as it says! |

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. It's the one disappointment with the Satmap and speaking to people with other GPS units it's a common issue.
The problem seems to be that the small errors in each reading are cumulative. I've found height by satellite the worst and height by map only slightly better.
It should be possible for Satmap to improve their algorithm for calculating total height by introducing some form of smoothing but you are unlikely to get anything that is very accurate. |

I used to use a Garmin 60CSx which usually gave ascents/descents pretty much in line with what I expected. My Active 10 seems to overestimate by about 50%. I've taken to downloading my Active 10 tracks to Memory Map on my PC, and converting them to routes within that programme. The ascents/descents that I then get are about right. Long-winded and a pain, but its a way to get the numbers (admittedly AFTER the walk!). |

Does the device use the GPS altitude (well known for being a bit problematic) or height based on a profile supplied with the map? I tend to use the track plot and overlay it onto MemoryMap to get a more accurate profile. _________________ Phil |
