Fortuna Clip on and IPAQ 5450 and Kane Car Pilot

I have just bought the fortuna clip on. after the about an 30 mins I had it up and running with a loc on 7-8 satellites.

My issue... I have been using a wired GPS with Kane Car Pilot (destinator v2) and have little in the way off lag.

With the clip on the car always seems to be 50-100 yds out and never gets me to the destiantion if the last turn is within this distance. It also means I get the instruction to turn left 30 yds after passing it. I have tried both modes and get the same response with both.

I am using com port 8 38400 baud NMEA Protocol.

Has anyone else had these issues using BT receivers over wired, or is there some sort of calibration that I have missed?

I also have a Fortuna Clip-On running COM port 8 38400 baud NMEA Protocol. I’ve never seen the issues that you’ve described. It sounds like the unit is in XT mode instead of ST mode.

I’ve never been brave enough to try my unit in XT mode, as ST mode has always been good enough for me. I have heard that it can be easy to place the Clip-On into XT mode without realising it.

You may want to switch the unit off and remove the battery for a few minutes and check that the unit is definitely in ST mode. Replace the battery and try again. Removal of the battery for a few minutes often works wonders.

I'm with Privateer here, sounds like your Clip-On is in XT Mode. I'd double check as it is easy to miss this on those units.

It should be very obvious when you are in XT mode - the satellite LED is orange. In ST mode it's either red or green - never orange.

Well just to be sure if have been out and tried again last night. in ST I get 7-8 sats and XT i was getting 9.

In either mode while driving I was getting lag. approaching a roundabout i would be told 'take x exit in 200 yds' when I was almost on top of the rouindabout and upon leaving I would be told to take the 2nd exit. Although in ST mode it did seem a little better I was still passing turnings before I was told to turn.

I saw a post on the GPSmart which had a similar issue, not sure if this is cnnected?

I haven't seen the sat light go orange except when I inititially turn it on in either mode.

Hi Canyonero,

It almost sounds like something is using the wrong Datum, if you’re out by 200 yards. I don’t know Kane Car Pilot. Does it have the ability to change Datum?

The Clip-On and TTNav use the WGS 84 Datum, but as far as I know neither can change Datum.

It’s just a thought.

I'm not sure about how or if I can change the datum. One thing I notice between the wired unit and the BT is the wired is using Sirf and the BT is NMEA.

What's the difference between these protocols. Could this cause the issue?

I hand't clicked re Kane which is of course Destinator. IIRC correctly Destinator (Kane) has a bug when using an NMEA receiver protocol. If you set your driver to use SiRF with the ClipOn the issue should be resolved.

Ok, That leaves me with another question then. How do I change the clip on to use SiRF instead of NMEA.

I have tried changing the protocol within Kane.

MENU
GPS Status
GPS Settings
change protocol to Sirf.

I then get a message that the GPS is not found.

Can you change the protocol on the receiver?

You can indeed change the protocol on receivers that support both SiRF and NMEA (the ClipON does).

Some apps perform this automatically when you select SiRF in the app, sadly Destinator is not one of them Sad

To achive this, download Leadtek's Winfast Navigator Util. I would advise caution, read the guide first and as ever if you are not comfortable doing this then leave well alone as making a mistake can render some receivers useless.

Not the most intuitive software in the world but I stumbled across the Sirf page and the Kane (destinator) is now picking up on the Sirf Protocol.

Took it out for a quick spin and I finally got the message destination reached! :D

Warned properly of turnings and roundabout junctions.

Many Thanks for your help on this. It was getting to a point where I thought the BT connection may not have been all it's cracked up to be.
But everything is now working just like the wired unit.
