I've found out via another place that updating the map will lose all mapshare customisations that you have made yourself. Therefore, if you have corrected a road that you know to be wrong, and it isn't in the general update, you'll lose that every time you update a map. Which if you are on the new subscription service, is quarterly!

This is not a good situation, and will stop me subscribing to updates as quarterly is about how often I travel to some places where I've made changes.

Mapshare customisations are made to the version of the map that you are using. If you happen to change maps, then yes, any amendments you have made will be lost. However some of the changes which have been ploaded to TomTom may have been incorporated into the new version of the map. I've already noticed one or two anomalies that I had previously spotted are now corrected in map v815.

That's the key though - you will think you are updating a map, but you are actually getting a new one, and thus losing all your changes. This could be critical for your use if you depend on a change you've made that not enough people will also make.

There should be a way to keep your personal changes if you want.

You could try (as an experiment) copying "MapUserPatch.dat" from the old map to the new.

As always, back up thoroughly first.

Whenever I make a MapShare correction, I also save the location and details in a POI file called "Map Errors".
Then when a new map comes out, I can copy the POI file across, check which ones have been corrected and re-submit all the ones which haven't (when I can be bothered!)

Since Andy suggested this in a previous post I have been following his advice. It is much easier than I expected as the tomtom remembers the position of the last map correction when you go into browse map to add the POI.
