How to do a Windows Back up?

Given all the sage advice about making a clean windows back up of your fully working and stable TomTom device - whilst it is. And aware of the wisdom that this is better than using Home 2.4 or the "latest" 2.3...

Can someone tell me accurately - stage-by-stage, the sequence of correct actions to achieve this?
Also, the right sequence should you wish to restore your back-up to your now malfunctioning TomTom.
