My 6 year old navman pin is just about worn out now and I would like to replace it with something like a garmin. When I bought the Navman it came with a full set of GB OS maps on CD and memory map software. The maps are still perfectly usable. Would I be able to use to use these maps on a Garmin (via SD card) or are they only compatible with Memory Map software?

If I cannot use them then I presume I would have to buy maps again (which annoys the hell out of me but there you are) so what maps will definitely work with a Garmin and still meet my needs for the device which is to use it for walking in the UK so we are talking having a good topographical map display with public footpaths marked. It is not intended for use when driving so I do not need or want street maps. (NB Garmins own topo maps do not meet my needs as they do not show rights of way)

NB it doesn't have to be a garmin, if you have experience of something similar that meets these needs then please tell.

In theory, only Garmin maps will work with Garmin units - but there are unofficial hack products available (e.g http://www.geopainting.com/en/) but Garmin only support vector maps at present.

I don't think your old Memory-map maps will work with the current version (5) of MM - but at least with some versions of MM you can scan in your own maps if, for example, you are going somewhere where digital walking maps are not available. Maybe the current version of MM on GPS-enabled PDA would do the job? Also Quo/Mapyx do a system that might be worth a look - again, you can scan in other maps
