voice alerts on garmin nuvi 300

Hi all

Got my nuvi 300 yesterday. First thing I did was register at the garmin site. It made me download some software then did a firmware upgrade from ver 5.0 to ver 5.50 which seemed a bit uneccessary !! Anyhow aside from this I can't seem to get voice alerts to happen automatically (i assume it should do this !)

I can get it to speak turns etc if i press the bottom right hand ("driving") button but otherwise it seems stubbornly mute and i really want it to give me info without having to press a button. Could anyone help a complete novice here please

Have you been through the options to make sure they are actually turned on?

I get fed up of being told where to go when using mine locally, so have them turned off, but will still get spoken instructions if I tap the bottom right corner.

Hi Scarecrow, thanks for the quick reply. Yes they're enabled in settings ...navigation...voice prompts...Guidance/status ON.

I was wondering if the enforced software upgrade I went through when I registered at Garmin has somehow messed up the auto voice system. Everything else seems as I would expect. Can you just confirm that yours definitely did voices originally without pressing the right corner button. (incidentally do you get a voice prompt when you press the button even if voice prompts is turned off in the menu) Thanks.
