Wish to upgrade from Navman 3450 + Smart ST set-up

My current set consists of:
Compaq Ipaq 3970
Navman 3450 jacket
Navman SmartST software V 1.91

The performance isn't bad but I somtimes have to wait for a minute or two to get a fix, find myself 'travelling up' adjacent roads 100 or so metres to the left or right and occaisionally I lose position. While this system is functional, a little more reliabilty would be welcomed.
Hmmm...Am I expecting too much from a handheld GPS system?

I'm a musician and tend to use it mainly around London and the south-east of England to find venues. I would only use European maps for holidays so they would be a nice bonus, but are not essential. Quality of routing/re-routing and maps are more important than the look - although I do find the auto-zoom and ETA display features in SmartST very valuable.

I use it in two cars so it needs to be easily movable.

Looking at the TomTom and Navman forums it seems like users of both these systems arn't very impressed by the current map sets in the new upadates so was wondering whether there are any other alternatives worth looking at.

Any opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.
