hi
i bought a 730 but i think i have messed up the file system and i am having problems with error messages like "unable to save map setting - file access error" in a red box top right of screen, also the unit keeps reboorting, is it possible to reload the unit to factory defaults and wipe any thing i have done.

thanks Chris

Presume it is too late to say you should always make a full backup BEFORE you start tinkering?

Do one now anyway, in case things get worse. Instructions are in the Faqs in the "sticky topics" at the top of the TomTom-specific forum section HERE

Now, there IS a "return to factory settings" in the menus (you need to have the menus set "to show ALL menu options" in the preferences). But obviously that won't put back anything you've lost.

Any idea of exactly what you did?

If that doesn't help, the next thing to try is to delete the system files from the TomTom - that is the "loose" files that are not in any folders LEAVE ALL THE FOLDERS ALONE.
Then if you connect to the PC and use TT's "Home" utility, you should be able to re-load the system files using "Update my device".

If none of that makes any sense, ask again and we'll try to spell it out in longer descriptions.

First try to get a Windows Explorer (not tomtom home) backup of your device as explained in FAQ # 1 here.

You may still have trouble with the gnsdata file whilst trying to get this backup if so there is a discussion of the gnsdata problem here but do get that Windows Explorer backup first if at all possible.

If you are happy with the backup copy you have you can format the TomTom Flash Memory then copy the backup to the device, don't worry about the missing GNS file - Mike

Great news, now that it is working correctly and you have it set up how you want take another Windows Explorer backup just in case it goes wrong at some future point, this will make re-loading easier - Mike
