...hope you dont mind. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 300 a couple of years ago and the unit failed completely within a year. I was sent a new one under warranty and this is now also playing up - the screen goes blank from time to time (although the voice continues) or the unit will just switch off entirely. This has put me off Garmin units, have I just been very unlucky or is there a reliability issue?

Now I cant trust my unit to get me to my destination, its time for a new one. I'd like a slightly bigger screen, something slim that I can put in a bag or pocket, and something thats straightforward to use. I'd also like to be able to download custom POIs as this was really useful on my Nuvi.

In a perfect world, I'd like traffic updates, but from reading various articles, it seems that the antenna way of doing things is still pretty rubbish - is that right? Voice input of addresses also sounds pretty neat.

I had a look at the new TomTom XL with the inbuilt mount (like the idea of that), but it doesnt seem to be available yet, also wondering how bulky it is. The other one Ive looked at is the 520. What do those of you who know all about these things reckon would be most suitable for me - am open to other options too?

Thanks so much in advance Very Happy

Depends if you want just UK maps or Europe maps as well .

While the Tomtom520 and the Tomtom720 are not perfect and are not without there problems my personal opinion is they would serve you well .
If you are interested in the speed camera data base do not even consider the Tomtom one the pocket GPS is so much better !!

Support and POI availability are very good for the Tomtom ( by support I mean the support on this site Tomtom support leaves a lot to be desired )

I can recommend the brodit mount system .

Tomtom are revamping there model range at the moment and the 520 and 720 can be bought at a very reasonable price now
