Updating tom tom 500

Hi new to the site and have a query
ive just bought a second hand tom tom go 500 ,and downloaded tom tom home so i can try and update maps,and add POI as theres nothing saved Cameras etc
when i connect to the PC via the USB cable the tom tom screen flashes for a few minuets then just displays the tom tom logo, and nothing works as the tom tom home says ,
any ideas ?could the PC cable be faulty?

There are several things we will need to know, to be able to get you up and running.

What is the Software Version?
Which Map Version?
Which Version of HOME did you download?

With the 500 NOT attached to the PC, switch on and when it's booted up, tap the satellite graphic in the bottom corner of the screen.

Then tap the small window, on the right, that says version x.xxx

If I remember correctly, Line 2 has the Software App No., and Line 5 has the Map Version No.

When we know that information, we can get started. There are slight differences in how 'things' are done with different versions.
