I recently purchased a StreetPilot 2720 off eBay. The previous owner got it in the USA and subsequently it has City Nav. Nth America NT v7 as its primary pre-installed mapping. It also came with City Nav Europe NT v9, the full retail version. There's just over 500MB of free space into which I can load chunks of Europe.
I ordered the update to City Nav Europe NT 2008 which came last week. I was expecting to be able to run this is disk overwriting City Nav Nth America, loading Europe as the primary mapping. I purchased the unlock code and proceeded to install. It loaded onto my PC, asked for the unlock code, fired up web updater and checked that my firmware was current (it is) and did I want to load any other voices (no). After that it exited and stopped. No updating the StreetPilot. I tried several times, uninstalled everything Garmin from my PC, tried a different PC all with the same result.
Garmin tech support were uncharacteristically unhelpful, suggesting I write the mapping onto an SD card... the 2720 doesn't use one... The second call to them ended by the agent giving up and saying "no sir, that's not possible" but he got very confused thinking I was trying to overwrite the base map. Have they outsourced their tech support to a generic call centre, it sure sounds like it, clueless agents who all sound distinctly foreign.
Does anyone here know of a utility that I can use to address the memory in the 2720, it doesn't have a 'mass storage' mode like the 2730 or 2820 so the primary mapping is, effectively, hidden from access.
It's not an absolute disaster, I can still load a fair bit of Europe 2008 onto the thing, just not all of it. _________________ Chas
