I bought a TT 520 last year, partly because of the option to play music through it. I've now tried to download albums onto it, and it doesn't seem to work. I've followed the instructions about the mp3 file, but then can't find the 'Music' file to drop the albums into. On the Tomtom, it shows the name of the band under playlist, but then says 'can't find any matches'!
Please could someone give me some help- a step-by-step guide for idiots would be good!! Most of my music is stored in itunes on the computer if that helps!!
It seemed so simple but i'm obviously going wrong somewhere!!

| yes, I think I have! On the mp3 folder, it shows the cds being there, but I cant get the music to play. I may not have transferred them correctly- I wasn't quite sure how to copy the music from itunes to the mp3 folder so just played about a bit!! Is there a simple was to do it? |

I've never used it, but are iTunes files actually mp3 ?
I accidently copied a windows media player file to my TT720 and it wouldnt play it, but was fine when i converted it to mp3 first. |

I'm almost certain you can only play itunes music on an ipod or your computer. One laborous way round it migh be to burn them to a recordable CD then convert them to mp3 format, them copy them to your device.

If I just want to copy a CD to my tomtom, how do I go about doing that? I've tried this evening, and cant even get that to work! An idiot's guide would be helpful! 
So frustrating as i'm sure it's very simple (isn't everything simple when you know how!)! |

you will have to convert your files to mp3 first so find a program ..heres a free 1 i found on google

I don't think so...
wma= Windows Media Audio, not something Apple would want to use!
From Wikipaedia:
iTunes 7 can currently read, write, and convert between MP3, AIFF, WAV, MPEG-4, AAC, and Apple Lossless.
iTunes can also play any audio files that QuickTime can play.
The Windows version of iTunes can automatically convert DRM-free WMA (including version 9) files to other audio formats, but it does not support direct playback or encoding of DRM protected WMA files.
For Rowzei, I'd have thought iTunes itself would be the most user-friendly way to copy your CDs. Just make sure it is set to encode them as mp3s rather than any other format. (Set it in: Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Importing)

Could have sworn when I went to the folder where the Itunes files are kept, the extension for all the files there was .wma |

Nope - as Andy says, wma files are Windows Media Audio Files (Microsoft's own format, for sure not that of Apple).
wmv is Windows Media Video Format - again Microsoft's format for video files.
Apple use either aac, or aac+
It stands for Advanced Audio Codec - and technically speaking, is not proprietary to Apple, as Sony use it, as well as Nokia, who now also fully support wma too.
aac tends to be the unprotected version, whereas aac+ is the Apple DRM Copy Protected version of it.
So if your folder does contain wma files, then this is what they are, unlike the file extension has simply become corrupt |

And thereby hangs another element of confusion...
As m4a is not an actual file type of and in it's own right in some respects...
They are actually known as 'containers' or 'wrappers'. That is, because they can and do actually contain code or data, of another file type, or types, such as, yes you have guessed it, aac files, or aac+. (But not like zip files work I hasten to add - they are not simply hiding the real file in there to be extracted).
They can equally also contain files such as mpeg4 video (mp4) or mpeg3 (mpeg) video too.
For Apple files, m4a tends to signify the more advanced form of file - it is actually an AUDIO ONLY version of an mpeg4 file (these can be video too you see).
Gets confusing doesn't it.
But before this goes (my fault) way too O/T, I'll 'wrap' up the little discourse on audio and video file formats.
If you do need more, I am sure Andy, who is a very clever guy, will be able to help and advise.
/Getting this back somewhat on topic, may I take the opportunity, given the thread name, to mention that I wish TomTom would make it easy to manage playlists.
Even basic mobile phones nowadays let you check and uncheck songs from the list of all music, and then add them to a new playlist, that you may call what you wish.
TT have no such control on the devices, and it makes song management a complete PITA.
Wish we could see this added sometime in the future. |
