Holux CF 270 - CE_Brake and Unknown char

Hi,
I am having problem with my Holux CF 270 GPS receiver. It can not find any satelites both when it is connected to my PDA (Toshiba e755) and when connected to my laptop via PCMCIA adapter. SIRFDemo in error window shows unknown char while in NMEA mode and CE_Break while in SIRF mode. Is that a configuration problem or my GPS receiver is foulty?
Guys, your prompt guidance (I am going to join my vessel on thursday and will not have acces to internet) how to restore proper functioning would be very appreciated.
